ITALIAN DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION ALLOCATES FUNDS TO TACKLE HUMANITARIAN EMERGENCY IN AL ANBAR

(ASCA) Rome, March 21, 2014 – The Directorate General for Development Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is allocating a multilateral contribution of 150,000 Euros to the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (FICROSS) to be part of a broader emergency response plan to tackle the outbreak of the humanitarian crisis in the western province of Al Anbar (Iraq). The Italian MoFA stated that the contribution is a tangible sign of attention toward the Iraqi people, deeply affected by the clashes between the army and the fundamentalist militias, which so far have been forcing at least 400.000 civilians to flee their home. The aim of the Italian contribution is to support FICROSS emergency response plan – implemented with the Iraqi Red Crescent and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)- in providing assistance to 25.000 people for a three-month period. Among its goals, the plan foresees the strengthening of the Iraqi Red Crescent emergency response capabilities, through technical support and training. Assistance to the population who fled Fallujah, Al Saqlawiya and Al Ramadi shall be provided through the supply of kits of core relief items to 2.000 families and the distribution of food allowances to 5.000 vulnerable families for one month.
