Italian Development Cooperation and Community of Sant'Egidio. The Iraqi Government receives humanitarian aid for IDPs in Fallujah.

Today, 31st October 2016, the Ambassador of Italy to Iraq, Marco Carnelos delivered a speech to the Iraqi press during the delivery and taking in charge by Iraqi Authorities of the first tranche of medical emergency supplies donated by the Community of Sant’Egidio in order to alleviate the serious conditions of IDPs in Fallujah.

The humanitarian operation has been undertaken in a coordinated fashion by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Community of Sant'Egidio and the Italian Ministry of Defence, by which the aircraft for the transportation of the aid has been provided. A second operation of the kind will deliver an important shipment of medical goods on next 8th November.

Ambassador Carnelos commented on the operation together with Counsellor Kathan Al Jibouri from the Presidency of the Republic and Mr. Andrea Trentini from Sant’Egidio Community.

Ambassador Carnelos highlighted the nature of the wider humanitarian operation of which today’s shipment is an important part of. The Italian Development Cooperation has organized the transportation by ship of over 12 tons of humanitarian aid, tents and emergency kits due to arrive in Basrah before the end of November and destined to the IDP camps in Fallujah district.

The Ambassador recalled the important role the Government of Italy has played in the effort to counter the humanitarian emergency which has been affecting Iraq since 2014, when Da’esh territorial gains caused displacements of millions of people. More recently, new waves of displacement have come as a consequence of the Iraqi Army’s campaign to liberate Iraqi soil.

During the displacement that occurred last summer as a consequence to Fallujah’s military campaign, the Italian Development Cooperation immediately provided with 1 million Euro some of the major humanitarian agencies conducting operations in that area (UNHCR and ICRC). Considering 2016 alone, the Italian Government allocated an amount of over 7 million Euros to counter the  umanitarian crisis and to stabilize areas of Iraq liberated form the so called Islamic State.

Mr. Kathan al Jibouri thanked the Government of Italy for its geneorus and multifaceted support in favour of Iraq and stressed the importance of relations between the Community of Sant'Egidio and Iraqi Authorities as well as Iraqi civil society.
