MISSION TO UR, URUK, ERIDU, BABILONIA AND BORSIPPA

The four-day mission to the historic sites of Iraqi heritage that Ambassador Greganti carried out in the central-southern areas of the country, together with the Secretary General of the Italian Ministry of Culture, Salvatore Nastasi, and the Director General of Museums, Massimo Osanna, has concluded.

Central moments of the mission were the visits to Ur, Uruk, Eridu, Babilonia and Borsippa, centers of extraordinary value for the development of humanity in the heart of Iraq, which the delegation was able to admire accompanied by prof. Franco D’Agostino of La Sapienza University of Rome and his team of experts. Also significant were the visits to the Museum of Nassiriya, a symbolic place for the Italian presence in Iraq, and to the extraordinary Iraqi National Museum in Baghdad, with the splendid rooms restored thanks to the contribution of the Italian Cooperation.

As for the institutional dialogue, there were meetings with the representatives of the Government of Iraq, particularly with the Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers Hamid al-Ghizi and the representatives of the Iraqi Ministry of Culture (Director of the State Board for Antiquities and Heritage, Laith Hussein, and Director General of Cultural Relations, Falah Hassan Shaker), and locally, with the Governors of Babil and Dhi Qar and with the President of the University of Babylon. In addition to confirming the deep friendship towards our country, talks confirmed the desire to further strengthen the excellent cultural collaboration between Italy and Iraq and the common commitment to the protection of Iraqi heritage, a legacy to be handed down to future generations also thanks to the decisive contribution of the Italian archaeological missions in the country.
