Babylon, October 2, 2025
The Italian Ambassador to Iraq, Niccolò Fontana, met today in Babylon with Adnan Al Faihan, Governor of Al-Hillah. At the heart of their discussion was the desire to strengthen a bond rooted in history and now aimed at new and ambitious prospects for cooperation.
For decades, Italy has been a key player in archaeological work in Iraq, leaving a profound mark right here in Babylon — the cradle of civilization and one of the wonders of the ancient world. Italian archaeological missions have contributed to uncovering and preserving the city’s unique heritage, passing on expertise and knowledge that remain a benchmark to this day. During the meeting, it was emphasized that collaboration in the cultural sector is not merely a chapter of the past but continues to be a living resource for the future of local communities.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to look ahead, exploring new avenues for industrial cooperation, with particular focus on the pharmaceutical sector. Italy, leveraging advanced expertise in research and technological development, intends to offer its know-how to strengthen local production capacities and foster the growth of a modern and competitive industry.
Through this dialogue, Italy and Iraq renew a partnership that unites the safeguarding of cultural heritage with a drive toward innovation, intertwining historical memory and economic progress.
