Baghdad, 4 November 2025 — The Italian Embassy hosted a ceremony to celebrate Italian Unity and Armed Forces Day 2025. Organised by the Office of the Defence Attaché, the event was attended by Iraqi civil and military authorities, representatives of the Armed Forces of the Missions accredited in the country, numerous representatives of the NATO mission in Iraq, led by its commander, French General Hintzy, members of the diplomatic community and a large delegation of Italian military personnel operating in the country.

Ambassador Niccolò Fontana and Defence Attaché Colonel Domenico Sermon emphasised the historical significance of this anniversary, paying tribute to the courage and dedication of the Italian Armed Forces, a true symbol of the nation, which have supported the Iraqi authorities in the fight against terrorism since the beginning, also within the framework of multilateral cooperation with the anti-Daesh Coalition, NATO Mission Iraq (NMI) and the European Union Advisory Mission (EUAM).

Commemorating the Unification of Italy, the celebration highlighted the Italian experience as an example for overcoming the challenges that Iraq faced in recent years.

‘I would like to thank Colonel Sermon for organising this ceremony with such care and dedication,’ said Ambassador Fontana, ‘which has allowed us to pay respectful tribute to all the military personnel who have served Italy and to those who continue to serve and defend our country with courage, spirit of sacrifice and determination, following in the footsteps of their predecessors.’
