Ambassador Niccolò Fontana carried out an institutional mission in southern Iraq, confirming the strengthening of Italy’s presence in the country through an integrated approach that combines economic diplomacy, development cooperation, protection of cultural heritage, and dialogue with political and religious authorities.
Visits to Basra, Nasiriyah and Ur highlighted the contribution of development cooperation and Italian companies, the commitment to enhancing archaeological sites, as well as support for local communities. In Najaf, discussions with representatives of the marjaiya reaffirmed the value of interreligious dialogue as a key factor for stability in Iraq and the wider region.
