Meeting between Ambassador Maurizio Greganti and the Chargé d’Affaires of the Ukrainian Embassy in Iraq, Oleksandr Buravchenkov

Ambassador Maurizio Greganti today hosted a meeting with the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Ukraine in Iraq, Oleksandr Buravchenkov, to receive updates on the evolution of the war in Ukraine, on sanctions against Russia and to exchange views on the de-escalation prospects of the conflict and the ongoing peace talks between the Ukrainian and Russian delegations in Turkey. Defense Attachés also participated, with Colonel Luigi Sambin on the Italian side.

Ambassador Greganti strongly reaffirmed the support of Italy and the European Union for the Ukrainian Authorities and Ukrainian people, praising the heroism, capacity for resistance and spirit of self-sacrifice of those who defend not only their land but also those democratic values ​​that Italy, Ukraine and the European Union share.

The Ambassador then confirmed to have pleaded Ukraine’s case also during institutional meetings with local interlocutors, offering to fully support all activities and steps that the Ukrainian Embassy in Iraq will take in favor of the ceasefire in order to to get to a shared and lasting peace.

Chargé d’Affaires Buravchenkov thanked Ambassador Greganti on behalf of Ukraine for the help that Italy is providing, in particular through the many humanitarian initiatives and the welcoming of refugees fleeing Ukrainian territory, hoping to maintain a close coordination between the Embassies in Iraq also in the future.

Finally, both expressed deep appreciation for Baghdad’s decision to support the Humanitarian Resolution in favor of the Ukrainian people voted on March 24 at the United Nations General Assembly, an occasion on which Iraq openly sided in support of peace, of a negotiated solution and of the need to protect the civilian population, in particular the most vulnerable and most affected by the war.
