IRAQ: Security Update

Security Update

26 March 2026

Travel to Federal Iraq and to the Kurdistan Region is strongly discouraged for any purpose.

The conflict that began on 28 February continues to cause significant disruptions and has a severe impact on international connections to and from Iraq. The country’s airspace remains closed nationwide. Land borders with Jordan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait remain open.

In light of the ongoing military developments, Italian nationals present in the country are advised to exercise the utmost caution in their movements, to remain in secure locations, and in particular to avoid approaching military installations and areas where crowds gather.

Nationals are also strongly advised to comply strictly with the instructions issued by the local authorities and to contact the Embassy in case of need.

The Embassy in Baghdad and the Consulate General in Erbil remain open and operational. Visa services for Iraqi citizens are temporarily suspended.

Nationals are reminded to register their presence in the country through the “Dove Siamo Nel Mondo” website (https://www.dovesiamonelmondo.it/) or by downloading the “Viaggiare Sicuri” application, enabling geolocation and ensuring that notifications are activated. Any communications will be sent via SMS from +39 342 415 4556 and through push notifications from the “Viaggiare Sicuri” app.

It is also recommended to follow updates published on the social media channels of the Embassy in Baghdad and the Consulate General in Erbil.

For any emergency, the Embassy is operational and can be reached 24/7 at +964 786 699 3034.
