Niccolò Fontana

Ambassador of Italy in Baghdad

Since November 7th,2024 he is the Ambassador of Italy to Iraq.

Deputy Director General for Communication of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation since January 1st, 2022, Niccolò Fontana has held the position of Spokesperson for the Ministry, dealing with institutional communication of the Foreign Ministry and its diplomatic-consular network. He personally oversaw the communication of the Minister of Foreign Affairs during missions abroad and on international meetings and events in Italy.

Since March 2019 he worked as First Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations, being involved in the reform of the UN Security Council, procurement for the benefit of Italian companies and relations with Italian personnel in the UN system.

He held the position of Head of the Economic and Commercial Office of the Embassy in Moscow between 2014 and March 2019. From July 2012 to August 2014 he was head of the Office for Italian and International Press at the Foreign Ministry’s Press Service.

From 2008 to 2012 he worked at the Italian Embassy in Washington and dealt with American domestic politics, relations with Congress and public diplomacy.  From 2004 to 2008, for his first assignment abroad, he held the position of head of the economic-commercial office at the Italian Embassy in Santiago de Chile, in years characterized by a strong development in bilateral relations and of constant growth in Italian trade and investment in the country.

He entered the diplomatic career in December 2000 and carried out his first assignment at the Foreign Ministry at the Diplomatic Protocol of the Republic.

Born in Florence on 6 July 1975, after graduating in foreign languages from high school, he graduated with honours in Political Science from the “Cesare Alfieri” Faculty of the University of Florence. He served, as a volunteer, in the 7th Alpine Regiment of Feltre, also participating in the NATO SFOR mission in Bosnia.

Married since 2003 to Tania Morrocchi, he is the father of Pietro, Ginevra and Cosimo. Passionate about football and basketball, he is a marathon runner. He loves reading, listening to music and traveling.

He is Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
