The 3rd edition of the Week of Italian Language in Iraq, organized by the Embassy of Italy, in collaboration with the Embassy of Switzerland and the Italian Department of the Baghdad University, will be running from 8 to 11 December.

Ambassador Niccolò Fontana in the presence of the Director of the Faculty of Languages Prof. Ali Adnan inaugurated this year’s edition consecrated to “Italian Language and Books: The World Between The Lines”. This year’s theme explores the relationship between language and literature – with a special focus on translation – emphasizing the crucial role of books in preserving and transmitting Italian cultural heritage, values and identity.

During the opening ceremony, Professor of Language Didactics Giuseppe Maugeri (University of Urbino Carlo Bo) conducted a seminar entitled “Teaching Italian LS through Literature”, followed by a lecture by Prof. Ahmed Al Asadi (2006 “Ignazio Silone” International Prize for Translation) on “‘Viaggio a Parigi – A Trip to Paris,’ from Italian to Arabic”.

This week, Prof. Maugeri is also holding an intensive training course for students of the Italian Department, as part of a multi-year collaboration with the University of Baghdad.

The Week will conclude with a screening of the film “L’Arminuta – A Girl Returned” (2021, Giuseppe Bonito), a film adaptation of Donatella Di Pietrantonio’s novel, winner of the 2017 Campiello Prize.
