Archaeological missions

Italy is committed in supporting archaeological, anthropological and ethnological missions around the world as a means to strengthen cultural relations and foster dialogue between countries. Cultural cooperation with Iraq, a country renowned for its extraordinary artistic and historical heritage, is particularly strong in the archaeological sector. Iraq has in fact the highest number of missions supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. Alongside traditional excavation and research activities, the projects provide training and knowledge transfer opportunities for local experts and operators. Therefore, these missions enhance the cultural heritage and strengthen the social-economic development of the sites in which they operate, promoting historical awareness and supporting political peace-making efforts in crisis areas.
