Minister Luigi Di Maio’s mission to Kuwait and Iraq

Today the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Luigi Di Maio, ended a two-day mission to Kuwait and Iraq.

In both countries, the Minister paid a visit to the Italian military contingents expressing his gratitude and appreciation for their selfless dedication and their professional service. The Minister visited the bases at Al Salem and Camp Singara and, in Baghdad, greeted the personnel of the Italian Tuscania and 13th Regiments, the NATO contingent and the International Coalition Against Daesh (CJTF).

In Iraq, the Foreign Minister also held talks with the Head of State, Barham Salih, and the Prime Minister, Mustafa Al-Kathimi, re-emphasising Italy’s commitment to the stabilisation and development of the country and to the fight against terrorism, both in the framework of the International Coalition, of which Italy is an active member, and the NATO mission, which Italy will be leading from spring 2022. Minister Di Maio then called for the reviving of trade relations, also by calling the fourth session of the bilateral Joint Commission.

During his stop at Erbil he met with the President of the Kurdish Regional Authority, Nechirvan Barzani, reviewing the main areas of bilateral cooperation with the region, in the economic, cultural and development cooperation sectors.
