Meeting with the Director of the State Board of Antiquites and Heritage of Iraq, Laith Majid Hussein

The enormous potential of Iraqi-Italian collaboration in the archaeological field was at the center of the meeting between Ambassador Greganti and the Director of the State Board of Antiquities and Heritage of Iraq, Laith Majid Hussein. Ambassador Greganti and Director Hussein first recalled the extent and importance of Italian archaeological interventions in the Country – such as the renovation of the rooms and works of the National Archaeological Museum of Iraq and the widespread presence of archaeological missions throughout the Country.

“Iraq is the cradle of the most ancient civilizations, it has an immense cultural heritage that constitutes the true wealth, the true oil of the Country” underlined Ambassador Greganti, ensuring Italy’s willingness to put its skills and know-how at disposal to unleash all the potential of Iraqi cultural resources. The Ambassador then highlighted how art and archaeology can play a leading role for Iraq’s economy through the development of both domestic and international cultural tourism.

Director Hussein thanked the Ambassador for the Italian contribution to the Iraqi archaeological scene, confirming his willingness to deepen common programs and projects. The Director then thanked the Ambassador with a bas-relief copy of the famous “Lamassu” (winged bull), a masterpiece of Assyrian art and a symbol of Iraqi artistic heritage.
