A new partnership was signed today between the Italian Government and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) in Iraq to launch “WE-GO: Women Empowerment for Green Opportunities”. H.E. Niccolò Fontana, the Ambassador of Italy to Iraq, signed the agreement with Mr. Mageed Yahia, WFP Representative in Iraq.

The signing ceremony brought together representatives from key stakeholders among national Authorities, including the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Environment. The UN Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Resident Coordinator, H.E. Ghulam Isaczai, also attended the ceremony. Their presence underscores the strong collaboration between national and international partners in supporting vulnerable communities and advancing sustainable development efforts, with a view to supporting climate-friendly livelihood systems and creating new jobs for the Iraqi population.

Focused on four Iraqi Governorates (Ninewa, Salah Ad Din, Thi Qar and Basra), the contribution from the Italian Government aims to empower local communities, crisis-affected people, and smallholder farmers, with special emphasis on women and women-led households. This innovative project focuses on enhancing livelihoods, promoting climate-resilient practices, and fostering women’s leadership in building sustainable food systems. Almost 260,000 people are expected to benefit from the project.
