Iraq Museum, Baghdad – 12 February 2025. ‘Between Eshnunna and Babylon: archaeological discoveries at Tell Muhammad, Baghdad’ (Prof. Nicola Laneri, University of Catania) is the first seminar of the cycle of free dissemination conferences developed by the Italian Embassy in Baghdad, in collaboration with the Italian Archaeological Missions in Iraq and the SBAH – Iraqi State Board of Antiquities and Heritage.

Professor Laneri described the results of the latest excavation campaigns at Tell Muhammad (Baghdad suburbs), aimed at the valorization and musealisation of the area whose history was closely connected to the city of Babylon during the First Dynasty (ca. 1850-1600 BC).

The initiative launched this year with the title ‘Incontro con l’Archeologo – Meet the Archaeologist’ aims to promote Italian archaeological research in Iraq – which has always been a pillar of bilateral relations between our two countries – and to enhance Iraq’s rich historical heritage by involving a wide audience of students, professors, professionals and archaeology enthusiasts. With more than 20 projects, Iraq is in fact the country with the largest number of Italian archaeological missions supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, as part of its cultural diplomacy strategy.
